LeConte Stewart House

Constructed in 1922 for notable Utah painter LeConte Stewart, this 1 1/2-story cottage was designed in the English Tudor Revival style by prominent Utah architects Harold Burton and Hyrum Pope. The house and the remainder of the buildings on the property, including the art studio, maintain their architectural integrity.

LeConte Stewart played a major role in the evolution of regional landscape painting in Utah and made major contributions to art education in the Salt Lake valley, Davis County, and Ogden. By the time the Stewart family moved into the house in January of 1923, he was already well-established as an artist. He lived in this house – the only home he ever owned – from 1923 until his death in 1990. As the place where LeConte Stewart created most of his work, the home and studio represent his art and the landscape that gave him his greatest inspiration.

Henry Blood House

The Henry H. Blood House was built about 1896. The house is important because of its association with Henry H. Blood, prominent Davis County Businessman and Governor of Utah from 1933 to 1940. The house was designed and built by William Allen. One of Utah’s most prominent architects, Allen designed many Davis County buildings although he was largely self-trained. Architecturally the house remains intact and sound and is an illustrative model of the late nineteenth century architectural tradition.

Isaac Sutton House

Built in 1904, the home was deeded in 1917 by Emma to her grandson, Raymond Sutton. The home has remained in the family ever since. Isaac and Emma were early Mormon pioneers. Having been converted in England in 1852, they immigrated to Utah. Brigham Young then sent them to help settle Provo. The home is rife with Victorian details such as the segmental arched openings, rusticated brick heads, corbeled chimneys, and a small gablet with eyebrow window. It also displays some prairie-style elements—the low pitched hip roof, wide overhanging eaves, stylized transoms and the heavy square columns on the front porch. It is a wonderful example of a home caught between two styles of architecture: Victorian, which was losing popularity at the time of construction, and prairie style, which was gaining popularity. While dating Sara and Kevin Wall visited her grandfather. As they walked into his house, Kevin told Sara, “I would love to live in a house like this someday.” His wish came true ten years ago when they purchased the home from Sara’s father after her grandfather’s death. Their seventy-eight year old brick home with its steep roof, half-timbered façade, multi-paned, leaded glass windows, and low gabled, rounded front entry is typically Tudor Revival style. It was built by Walter Hedquist, a Provo druggist, and later owned by Myron Fulrath, a Geneva Steel executive. Sara’s paternal grandparents, Boyd and Louise McAffee, purchased the home in the 1950s and raised their five children there. Boyd was a prominent educator in the Provo School District, serving as principal of Timpanogos Elementary and later, as the first principal of Provost Elementary. The Wall family enjoys spending time in the beautiful sun room and being with their close friends from the neighborhood.

This home was built by William V. Helfrich in 1891 in the architectural style of Victorian Eclectic with Queen Anne shingling and tower. The architect is unknown. The house has irregular massing and cross gables with a stone foundation. A two-story addition to the north rear corner was made within 10 years of construction. Major alterations included a two-story frame enclosure of the front porch, an addition to the south rear corner, two sheet metal roofed basement entrances on the façade and north side, as well as a wood fire escape at the rear. An earlier porch had a brick railing wall with neoclassical posts. Many additions and alterations were removed in 2010 restoring the integrity of the original home.

William V. Helfrich was employed as a cashier for Citizens Bank. He and his wife Agnes were residents of the property until 1896. Patrick Healy Sr. acquired the property in 1897. Mr. Healy immigrated from Ireland in 1862 arriving in New York eventually settling in Utah in 1868 and marrying Mary Ann Patterson. He obtained employment with the Southern Pacific Railroad and on the 10th of May 1869, he witnessed the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory, Utah. He retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad Co. as a locomotive engineer.
