5️⃣ things STR hosts tell each other… that are quietly holding you back. 👀

I used to believe all of these.

They sound like “safe” advice…
But most of them? They’re fear dressed up as strategy.

And the truth is: these beliefs don’t protect your business…
They limit it.

Let’s reality-check them:

1️⃣ “Guests will trash your place.”
Not if you run your business like a business.
Clear expectations + smart screening = better guests.
Damage becomes the exception… not your everyday worry.

2️⃣ “You have to be the cheapest to stay booked.”
No. You have to be the most valuable.
When you compete on price, you attract problems.
When you compete on experience… you attract respect.

3️⃣ “Basic is fine if it’s clean.”
Clean is your entry ticket—not your advantage.
The real magic (and revenue) happens when guests feel something the moment they walk in.

4️⃣ “Say yes to every guest request.”
That’s how burnout starts.
Strong boundaries don’t hurt your business…
They build it.

5️⃣ “Platforms change too much to keep up.”
They do.
But the hosts who win aren’t the ones who resist change…
They’re the ones who adapt faster than everyone else.

👉🏻 At some point, I realized…
The biggest risk wasn’t bad guests, slow seasons, or algorithms.

It was playing small.

Growing up in East Germany, everything felt limited, opportunities, choices, even dreams.

Fast forward to now, and I’m living in a country where everything feels possible.

5 Things short-term rental hosts tell each other, let’s see which ones are actually true. 🧐

They often sound like "expert" advice, but most are just myths born from fear. It took me years to see through them, and the reality is these "rules" are often more poisonous than protective.

The Reality Check:
1️⃣"Guests will trash your place." → NOT TRUE. High-level screening and clear rules make damage the rare exception, not the rule.

2️⃣ "You have to be the cheapest to get booked." → NOT TRUE. Racing to the bottom attracts "bottom-tier" guests. Value and experience beat price every time.

3️⃣"Basic is fine if it’s clean." → TRUE. While clean is the absolute baseline, remember that real ROI starts to climb when you add intentional design and comfort.

4️⃣ "Say yes to every guest request." → NOT TRUE. Boundaries create respect. A professional "no" protects your sanity and your asset.

5️⃣ "Platforms change too much to keep up." → NOT TRUE. Stagnation is the only real risk. Adaptable hosts are the ones who thrive, regardless of the algorithm.

I’ve been there. When you’re chasing big goals, it can feel lonely at first, especially if your friends or family don’t understand your vision.

The ones who are already doing what you want to do. The ones who lift you up, share what they’ve learned, and remind you that yes, you can absolutely build your own short-term rental business if you put your mind to it.

I moved to the U.S. with a very clear plan.

Build a modern lighting business.
Grow an e-commerce brand.
Create something of my own.

And for a while, it worked.

But over time, things shifted.
Competition increased. Costs went up. Margins got tighter.

And I found myself asking a question that many entrepreneurs quietly face:

"What is this still the path I want to be on?"

That’s not an easy place to be.
Because from the outside, everything can look "fine."

But internally, you know something is off.

So we made a pivot.

We stepped into real estate, without a background, without a clear roadmap, just a willingness to learn and figure things out along the way.

At some point, we tested furnished rentals.
No big strategy behind it. Just curiosity.

And that one decision changed everything.

What started as an experiment turned into:
→ building a portfolio across Metro Atlanta
→ co-hosting and managing for other owners
→ becoming a licensed agent (2018)
→ passing my broker exam (2025)
→ launching a boutique property management company
→ and even publishing two books along the way

None of this was part of the original plan.

But that’s the part I’ve come to appreciate the most:

The path does not always unfold the way you expect, but that does not mean you are off track.

Sometimes it means you are getting closer to what actually fits.

If something in your business or life no longer feels aligned, it might not be a failure.

It might be a signal.

A pivot does not erase your past, it builds on it.
