When is the best time to see fall colors in Marquette, Michigan?

If you’re planning a fall trip to Marquette or Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, here’s my local advice after watching our seasons change year after year:

September: Fall color slowly begins. You’ll start seeing pops of red, orange and yellow throughout the month, but Marquette is still mostly green.

🍁 October 1–15: This is the sweet spot for Marquette fall colors. If seeing beautiful fall foliage is your priority, I recommend visiting during the first two weeks of October. You’ll usually get the best combination of gorgeous color and milder fall weather.

Third weekend of October: There can still be plenty of beautiful color, but our weather becomes much less predictable. We’ve been known to get our first snow by then! Bring layers, a warm coat, hat and gloves.

Last week of October: Most of the leaves are usually down, but don’t rule out a visit. We might have a gorgeous crisp fall day—or a chilly one! Either way, hiking around Marquette and Lake Superior is still wonderful if you dress appropriately.

As my mother-in-law, a Marquette native, always says:

“There’s no bad weather—only bad clothing.”

Every Saturday morning, downtown Marquette comes alive.

The blanket isn’t always for warmth.

Early summer on the shores of Lake Superior has one tiny catch: biting flies. They’re especially common in late spring and early summer, and a south wind can bring even more of them to the beach.

As annoying as they are, these little pests are an important part of the ecosystem. They’re near the bottom of the food chain and help feed birds, fish, dragonflies, spiders, and other wildlife. Nature doesn’t always make itself comfortable, but it usually has a purpose.

The good news? Fly season is temporary. A little bug spray, long sleeves, or even a cozy blanket can make those magical sunrise mornings much more enjoyable.

And trust me… the sunrise is still worth it.

Not every flower is trying to win a beauty contest. Some are quietly becoming one of the Upper Peninsula’s sweetest wild treasures.

If you’ve never tasted a thimbleberry, you’re not alone. They’re one of those special treats that can’t be mass-produced.

Thimbleberries are soft, delicate berries that are too fragile to ship, which is why you’ll almost never find them in grocery stores. They’re best enjoyed right where they grow.

Their flavor is often described as a blend of raspberry with hints of honey and a gentle tartness. Sweet, slightly tangy, incredibly juicy, and gone in just a bite or two.

Because they’re so delicate, harvesting is slow and done by hand. Each berry slips off the plant with the lightest touch, making every handful feel like a little reward after a summer hike.

While thimbleberries grow in scattered regions of northern North America, they’re especially at home around Marquette, Michigan and throughout the Upper Peninsula, where sunny forest edges, old logging roads, and trails create ideal growing conditions.

If you spot the white blossoms in early summer, remember the location—you may be rewarded with ripe berries later in the season. As always, only harvest where it’s permitted, and leave plenty behind for wildlife and other hikers to enjoy.
