Janzen House Affordable Rental Housing and Emergency Shelter for those experiencing homelessness. Transitional ho

Designed by the Marquette architectural firm Lovejoy and Demar, the Hotel Janzen was built in either 1890 or 1893. The railroad hotel was conveniently located near the Duluth, South shore and Atlantic Railway (DSS&A) Depot. The hotel had 34 rooms and was advertised as having modern features such as “hot and cold running water.”

In the summer of 1977, the hotel began receiving condemnation notices

for failing to meet health and safety standards. A fire in 1983 damaged the Janzen to the point that its demolition seemed likely. However, a newly formed committee called “Save the Janzen” and spearheaded by City Commissioner Robert Kulisheck renovated the building after raising $30,000 and receiving matching funds from the City of Marquette. The Janzen was purchased by the Save the Janzen Committee in January of 1984 from owner Doris M. Bullock and began operating as the as the non-profit Janzen House, a shelter “for potentially homeless people” in the Marquette area.

Just in time for the weekend. The Janzen House would like to thank Isaac Behrens from Cloverland farms for bringing us a case of their farm raised fresh eggs this afternoon. They have been providing us eggs over the past several years, and since the delivery we have already boiled up 3 dozen for egg salad sandwiches. Have a great weekend everyone. 🐔🐔🐔🐔🥚🥚🥚🍳🍳🍳🐓🐓🐓

Happy Friday afternoon. We would like to thank Evelyn M for assisting us in the kitchens yesterday. She made an absolute vat of BBQ pulled pork and set up a station so the residents could make their own BBQ sandwiches----and then whipped up the pictured "Peanut Butter Jelly Sliders." Thank you again, and everyone have a great weekend. TGIF!! 🍔🍔🍔🍔🥪🥪🥪🥪🌞🌞🌞🌞

Good Morning. A shout out to Matt L. who planted and has been caretaking the Janzen rolling Garden Center this summer. Matt has lived with us for about a year, and has been keeping the gardens and the grounds in the front porch area in perfect order all summer every morning before heading off to his job at L & M Fleet Supply in Marquette. We have using the ripening tomatoes in the kitchen for the past month. 👨‍🔧🎍🪴🌺🍅🍅🥕🍓🍉🌞

Thank you to Paul and Liz from Marquette for returning as Volunteers at the Janzen. They are currently making Chipotle Roasted Pork sandwiches, and based on past experience will continue to manufacture food until we are set past the weekend. Both are staff at Marquette High School and.......they were out of town on vacation for the whole "smoke" thing and apparently brought the fresh air from out West back with them🍔🍔🍔🥪🥪🌞🌞🌞

Thank you to Lisa from Negaunee, who has been cooking this morning at the Janzen House. First it was a chicken rice casserole, and now its on to grilled cheese and salami sandwiches. This is Lisa's 2cd volunteer shift, and signed up to assist us initially through the Yoopers United website, which lines up interested volunteers with a wide variety of projects with various Marquette County non-profits and educational settings. Additionally we would like to thank Mark from the 906 Adventure Team who yesterday brought us tons of the Texas Toast and the cheese we are using for the sandwiches.

The Janzen House would like to express our sincere appreciation to Aaron (Red Vest) and Darren (Camo Vest) from Lowe's in Marquette. They spent a considerable amount of time several days ago helping Janzen House Board Members David (Blue Shirt), Sara (black) and Susan (white blazer) fill a Lowes Community Impact Grant. This allowed us to "shop" at Lowes for materials and tools directly from the products in their stores inventory. We picked up a huge supply of flooring, paint (and painting materials), and power tools. This gift will allow us to keep installing new floors, continue painting rooms and furniture, and utilize a brand new set of power tools while we are accomplishing that. The overall grant was arranged by Lowes manager Mark Byczek, and we received the equivalant of $2,500 from inventory. Thank You!!!!! 👨‍🔧👷‍♂️👷‍♀️🪛🔧🔨🪚
