How well do you know the "Shark Fin" of Martins Beach? 🦈
With the rain we’re having the next couple of days, I figured we could all use a little coastal "sunshine" from last week! I caught this angle of Pelican Rock during a clear window.
Let’s see who knows the secrets behind one of our most iconic (and controversial) local landmarks!
1. Is it a "Shark Fin" or a "Pelican"?
The Secret: Most of us call it "Shark Fin Rock" because of that sharp peak, but on the official maps, it’s Pelican Rock. If you look at the top with binoculars, it’s basically a high-rise apartment for local seabirds!
2. Why was there a "Gate" here for so long?
The Secret: This beach is the site of one of the longest legal battles in California history. The fight over public access went all the way to the Supreme Court. It’s a landmark case, proving that even a billionaire can’t easily close off the Pacific. ⚖️
3. What’s the deal with the "Martins" name?
The Secret: It wasn’t a famous explorer. It was named for Nicholas L. Martin, an Irishman who managed the land in the 1850s. The family eventually built a general store and cafe there that locals visited for generations. ☕
4. The "Keyhole" Alignment?
The Secret: See that archway at the base? During certain times of the year, at the perfect low tide, the sun aligns so you can see the sunset directly through the "eye" of the rock. 🌅

P.S. Since the rain has me grounded for a couple of days, I’m planning my next flights. Are there any local spots or historical landmarks you’d love to see from a higher perspective? Drop a suggestion below! 👇
