Constructed in 1906 for Jefferson Security Bank, this distinctive building at the corner of German and Princess Streets in Shepherdstown is a fine example of Beaux-Arts architecture. The style is characterized by symmetry, classical ornamentation, and formal composition, drawing from academic design principles developed at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, which emphasized classical precedent, proportion, and ornament as expressions of civic order and permanence.

If you look closely, you can see hallmark details of the style, including Ionic columns, decorative swags, and floral motifs. These elements were intentionally used in early twentieth-century bank buildings to convey stability, prosperity, and confidence, important qualities for a financial institution.

The building served as the bank’s headquarters until 1975, when Jefferson Security Bank moved to a larger facility to accommodate modern needs. Today, its richly detailed facade remains an important part of Shepherdstown’s historic streetscape and a reminder of the craftsmanship and civic pride that shaped the town’s built environment.
