The pawpaw is the largest fruit native to North America, and Ohio is the heart of its range.

It grows on a small understory tree in the shade along creek bottoms and river valleys, and it looks nothing like anything else here. Green, oblong, about the size of a mango, growing in clusters. The inside is custardy and pale yellow with large brown seeds.

The taste is the part people cannot describe consistently. Banana is the usual comparison, with mango and vanilla in it, sometimes a citrus edge. Chilled, it eats like pudding.

Ohio kids used to know exactly where the pawpaw patch was. That knowledge got passed down like a fishing spot. You went in September, when they drop, because a pawpaw does not ripen properly on the tree and does not travel at all. They bruise in a day and go off in three.

That fragility is why you have never seen one in a grocery store. There is no commercial supply chain that can handle a fruit with a three day window.

It fed people for a long time. Indigenous communities across the Ohio Valley cultivated and traded them. Lewis and Clark ate pawpaws when their rations ran out on the return trip. The old children's song about picking up pawpaws in a basket is a real reference to a real practice.

Then refrigeration and national distribution came, and a fruit that could not ship simply disappeared from the culture within a generation.

Ohio has been bringing it back. Ohio University in Athens has done breeding research, and the Ohio Pawpaw Festival in Albany every September draws thousands for pawpaw b**r, ice cream, jam and the fruit itself.

Find a creek bottom in southeast Ohio in mid September.

Look down. They will be on the ground.
