Matagorda Island may be the most remote stretch of coastline on the Texas Gulf, a long, windswept barrier island where human presence has faded and nature has steadily reclaimed the land. Covering more than 50,000 acres, the island is entirely government-owned and jointly managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
