I got a bad review once.

My one and only in 12 years.

And part of the story involves me standing in line to ride Frozen Ever After at Disney World. 😂

Here's what happened...

I had sold my clients' home for the highest price per square foot their neighborhood had ever seen. From a real estate standpoint, it was a fantastic result.

But my sellers didn't feel like they'd had a fantastic experience.

And that's something I've thought about a lot since.

Their closing happened while I was on a family vacation at Disney World. I had offered to arrange for them to sign early so I could be there with them, but they preferred to sign on the scheduled day.

They were disappointed that I wasn't there.

They were also disappointed that my husband had hosted their open house instead of me. And in their review, they said I hadn't stepped foot inside their home after our initial consultation.

That part wasn't true. I had been there, but I think what they were really telling me was something different:

They didn't feel like I had been there enough.

My first instinct was to defend myself.

I cared about them. I cared about their sale. I worked hard for them. And I had delivered an incredible result.

But with a little distance, I realized that two things could be true at the same time.

I could have done a really good job selling their house, and there could still be things I could have done better.

That experience made me take a hard look at the way I communicated with my sellers. I realized that doing the work isn't enough. My clients need to know what's happening at all times, understand what I'm doing behind the scenes, and most importantly, feel taken care of throughout the process.

So I made some changes in the way I communicate with clients. Now I often times OVER communicate. They know everything I am doing to get their home sold!

But here's my favorite part of this story.

Two years later, I got a message from those same sellers.

They apologized for the bad review.

They didn't need to.

I wasn't angry with them. I hadn't been holding onto it. And I'd always genuinely wished them the best.

But that message meant a lot to me.

I've been selling real estate for more than a decade, and I have plenty of transactions I'm proud of.

Strangely enough, I'm grateful for this one too.

Because sometimes the client who gives you the glowing five-star review reminds you what you're doing right.

And sometimes the one who doesn't makes you better.
