📚Just finished Atomic Habits by James Clear.
This book has been on my shelf for over a year, and I’ve just gotten around to it despite all the hype I’ve heard since its release. I’m unsure what took me so long to pick it up, especially being big on systems and processes, but I’m glad I did.
Building tiny habits that compound over time leads to extraordinary results. He even says, “Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.” It makes so much sense; I couldn’t have said it any better.
By getting just 1% better every day, by the end of the year, you’ll be 37x better than you were before! If that’s not a remarkable result, then I don’t know what is. Could you imagine a 37x ROI?! Well, you can, and it’s in the best form of an investment: investing in yourself.
The problem lies with people setting goals instead of habits. This is flawed because goals are about the results you want to achieve. Winners and losers can have the same goals, but what separates the two is that winners have systems and processes in place for small improvements that ultimately lead to achieving those goals. This is where he states, “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
It gets better. If you’ve considered changing your identity and becoming a newer, better version of yourself, think “You 2.0,” then your behavior needs to change. To change who you are, you must change what you do. You become your habits.
One of the keys to creating habits and, more importantly, sustaining them is: your environment. Who and what you’re surrounded by. Are the people and items in your life holding you back or sabotaging your growth? If you’re surrounded by negativity, then it’s time for a change. Rearrange the furniture or items in your home, take a break from social media, and cut off toxic people. As humans, we crave to fit in, but fitting into the wrong thing(s) is harming us. Break the chain, move on, and become the new you.
Want to build better habits? Use the 4 Laws:
• Make it obvious
• Make it attractive
• Make it easy
• Make it satisfying
