Spring has sprung! It’s time for some spring cleaning. Here are some home maintenance tasks you should do this spring that will go a long way toward keeping your home happy and healthy:
Often things like yard cleanup, power washing, cleaning out clutter from the garage and straightening closets come to mind when considering spring time, but spring is also a good time to perform routine home maintenance. I could make a list a mile long of important spring cleaning tips, but the most important and most often neglected is the gutter system of your home.
So here is my home maintenance tip of the week. Clean your gutters! Check to see that the gutters are not blocked by leaves or other debris. Clogged gutters can cause water to leak into the soffits and eves and sometimes into the walls and may cause costly damage. Also check to see that the gutters and downspouts are tightly attached. Things like snow and ice, leaves and other debris and even wind from winter storms all put stress and strain on the gutters and, over time, will loosen the attachments. It is not uncommon for most homes to need to have the gutters adjusted or tightened up periodically. While we are on the subject, make sure that the gutter downspouts are directed at least 4 feet or further away from the foundation in order to protect your home from excess moisture. Damp basements and crawlspaces are more than a nuisance, if left unattended moisture issues will lead to property damages including wood rot, uncontrolled mold growth, insect or vermin infestation and a less healthy indoor environment.
If your home does not have gutters or some type of roof drainage system you should consider having them installed. Water that pools at the foundation of your home can easily seep into the basement or crawlspace causing moisture related damage or mold growth. Older homes with hollow block walls or brick foundations are particularly susceptible to excess water at or near the foundation. Often older homes have no water proofing sealant applied to the exterior side of the foundation walls. These waterproofing materials are common on a more modern home and are now required to be applied to new homes and also to the foundation of an addition to an existing home.
