Fires spread quickly! Once your smoke alarm sounds, you may have less than 2 minutes to escape safely. In a fire, every second counts.

Why is this important?
Smoke can fill your home within minutes, making it hard to breathe or see. A working smoke alarm detects smoke early, giving you the critical time needed to act and get out before conditions become life-threatening. Without a functioning alarm, you may not be alerted in time, especially while asleep.

Key Reminder: Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and near all sleeping areas. Test alarms monthly and replace them every 10 years for optimal performance.
Create and practice a fire escape plan with your family so everyone knows what to do when the alarm sounds. Early warning saves lives—make sure your smoke alarms are up to date and functioning properly!

🚨‼️Jones County Government will begin accepting supplies to help with disaster relief in Western North Carolina beginning 8:00AM tomorrow morning at the Jones County Civic Center. Emergency Management and Law Enforcement staff are coordinating the effort to take these supplies to a preferred location to exhaust any chaos. Supplies will be accepted until otherwise noted‼️🚨

- **Every six months:** If you frequently use your dryer (e.g., families with children)
- **Twice a year:** If you have pets 🐾

There are various options available to homeowners for cleaning their vents. If you're unable to do it yourself, consider hiring a handyman service that offers vent cleaning as one of their services.

Onslow County encourages all Citizens to prepare now for Tropical Storm Debbie. Periods of heavy rain will likely last late into the week as the storm slowly moves through the Southeast. Currently forecasted impacts to our area include heavy rain, flash flooding, and dangerous rip currents.

Flooding can occur swiftly from tropical storm rain or gradually from larger-scale rainfall events. Just six inches of water is enough to make a vehicle lose contact with the road, and only 18 inches can sweep it away. Tragically, many fatalities could have been avoided by simply turning around. A canceled, delayed, or rerouted trip is always worth the safety.

💧 Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Cancel, delay, or reroute your trip if you encounter flooded roads.
💧 Do not drive around barriers!
💧 Flooded roads may hide dangers like washed-out roadbeds or underwater obstructions.
💧 Keep children away from flooded areas or fast-moving water.
💧 Stay alert, especially at night when flood dangers are harder to recognize.
