💰 **Don’t overpay on your property taxes South Texas friends!**
If you just got your Notice of Appraised Value and it seems too high, you have the right to protest it—and it could save you money.
Here’s a quick breakdown of how to protest your property taxes in Hidalgo and Cameron County:
✔️ **Check your appraisal**
Make sure the details (square footage, condition, etc.) are correct. Errors can increase your value.
✔️ **Compare your home**
Look at similar homes (“comps”) in your area—if they’re valued lower, that’s strong evidence.
✔️ **File your protest**
You can file **online, by mail, or in person** with the Hidalgo or Cameron County Appraisal District. ()
⏰ **Deadline:** Typically **May 15 OR 30 days after your notice was mailed (whichever is later)**—don’t miss it! ()
✔️ **Attend your hearing (if needed)**
Start with an informal review, and if needed, go before the Appraisal Review Board.
💡 Good news: Many homeowners successfully lower their values—and there’s **no penalty for protesting**.
