One of Oakland’s most iconic shopping plazas has new owners!

Congratulations to my clients, Anthony and Susanna, for the sale of their plaza. They’ve owned many successful businesses in Garrett County and give back any chance they can.

They reached out to me last year wanting to sell their commercial plaza to get some time back (their 2 young kiddos are super involved in sports and other school functions). After just a few months of marketing, we agreed to a contract in August of 2025. We went through 10 months of contract period, lots of meetings and phone calls, highs and many lows, and we were finally able to close on their property in early June.

Congratulations to the buyers on this property as well (I was also able to help them navigate this purchase). The new owner has BIG plans for this property, and I cannot wait to see all of the great things he does with it. I think our community will be very excited. 🙂

Nathan Hale had just turned 21 years old.

To put that into perspective, were he the same age today, he would’ve been born in 2005. He was Yale educated and had a prosperous, long life ahead of him.

This is not the stereotype of a revolutionary willing to risk his life because he had nothing to lose.

Nathan Hale was just a kid. He could’ve avoided the conflict altogether (as many people did), not chosen sides, and looked forward to a peaceful life in what was about to become the most prosperous country in the history of human civilization.

But he didn’t do that.

When General George Washington personally asked for a volunteer to spy on the British troop movements on Long Island—behind enemy lines—Nathan Hale volunteered. He knew how important it would be for the cause of liberty.

At this point, morale was low. The Americans were losing the war.

He knew what it meant if he was captured.

His brothers had fought the British at Lexington and Concord, the famous battles that started the war. It’s important to note that soldiers fighting these early battles in 1775 risked far more than than we may realize—the Continental Congress didn’t even unite to officially declare our independence until July of 1776. And even then it was controversial! The battles at Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill were fought purely on principle, before anyone knew there might be reinforcements from the other colonies.

Early on, it was still a Massachusetts war, not an “American” war. The other colonies didn’t want to get sucked in to a violent conflict with the most powerful military empire on Earth.

But this was the kind of family Nathan Hale was raised in.

They didn’t wait until it was “safe” to join the patriot cause. They were willing to risk their very lives to create the philosophical momentum that eventually won over public opinion.

So in 1776, Nathan Hale volunteered to become a spy for General Washington.

Ordinary soldiers were not usually executed if captured. Spies were, because it was viewed as a “dishonorable” act of treason.

And that’s exactly what happened. He was eventually captured behind enemy lines, crossing the Long Island Sound.

The next morning, September 22nd, 1776, he was executed.

He was still a kid when he uttered his famous last words before being hanged: “My only regret is that I have but one life to give for my country.”

It took 5 more years of sacrifice, but the American cause eventually prevailed in 1781 at Yorktown. The early sacrifice of men like Nathan Hale convinced the French that the war was winnable, and they finally allied with the American colonists to help defeat the British.

Like most of history, this was never a forgone conclusion. It required men like Nathan Hale (and his brothers) to risk their lives BEFORE there was any certainty of reinforcements. They were happy to do the right thing....because it was the right thing.

Not because the outcome was guaranteed.

It almost never is.

So remember that Memorial Day is not just a generic patriotic holiday.

It’s specifically to remember those who gave their LIVES for our freedom—men who traded all of their tomorrows for our today.

Men like Nathan Hale.

Here’s a hot take that is bound to ruffle some feathers…

Realtors are not required to buy or sell real estate. 🫣

Yep. I said it.

And honestly the industry needs to stop acting like that’s not true. Many agents act like not using a Realtor is guaranteed to be a disaster every single time. That simply is not always the case.

You do not legally need me.
You do not have to hire an agent.
You absolutely can do it yourself.

Realtors are not a necessity.
Realtors are a service.
A strategy.
A buffer.
An experienced problem-solver when things go sideways.

But, we are not a requirement.

If you want to FSBO your house, you absolutely can.
If you want to buy direct, you have every right.
If you want to take it all on yourself… I genuinely hope it goes smoothly for you.

But also… don’t confuse “not required” with “not valuable.”

Because when things do get complicated (and they often do 😬), that’s where the right agent earns every dollar of what they’re paid.

The truth is, the best agents aren’t afraid to say you don’t need them. Because we know when you choose us, it’s for a reason.

If you do want guidance, strategy, or someone fighting for you when things get tricky… I’m here. If not? I still hope your deal goes smoothly and you win.

Okay everyone expects “fancy” restaurants to have good food. But what’s a non-fancy place here in Garrett County that has amazing food?

I firmly believe that buying a house at a young age is one of the absolute best things you can do. Will owning a house make you “rich?” Of course not. But it lays a financial foundation where every month you’re building equity in SOMETHING. This is not insignificant.

Making progress towards a goal is addicting (in a good way), and it eventually shows up in other areas of your life. The younger you learn this, the better.

More important than the money itself is the mindset this habit unlocks. Every goal in life worth pursuing is going to take a long time... and it’s going to require ongoing consistency more than temporary intensity. Too many people are trying to get rich quick when they should be focused on getting rich slowly.

In any endeavor, the price of success is usually just doing the same boring things over and over again... that most people aren’t willing to do. This is what creates results in the gym, in business, and ultimately in life.

This is why cultivating the emotional discipline to pay a monthly mortgage is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

It’s more than a mortgage, it’s about the type of person it helps you to become.

You will know your kids as adults far longer than you’ll know them as children. If you’re lucky, you’ll know your kids for about 50 years. Your kids will only be “kids” for about ten of those fifty years. That means 80% of the time you’ll ever have with your kids, they’re not “kids.”

You only get:
1 summer with them as a baby
3 as a toddler
5 as a child
3 as a pr***en
6 as a teen

Enjoy it while it lasts. Don’t waste those years. ❤️

Oh, and one more thing…if you're looking for the perfect house to make your memories in my cell is (301) 616-8384.

Let's talk.

As the weather warms up, it has me thinking about Taco Tuesdays and being outside on the boat (and all of the other amazing things that summer brings to the Deep Creek Lake area)

And if delicious Mexican food and extra large adult beverages sounds like your kind of fun, then you need to check out Don Patron Mexican Restaurant right here in Oakland.

First things first: I love any restaurant that serves up a little appetizer for the table, whether that’s some bread and butter or chips and salsa. Their chips & salsa are delicious (I get a little side of queso, too!)

If anyone knows me, they know I’m kind of a picky eater. However, when it comes to this place, there isn’t much I wouldn’t touch - it’s all delicious! This time around, I got the Chori-Burrito. It’s a chorizo and chicken burrito with rice and black beans, wrapped up into a warm tortilla. Now here’s why it’s the real winner: it’s covered in spicy queso cheese and pico de gallo.

It hits the spot EVERY time.

So next time you’re not wanting to cook and needing a delicious meal for the family, definitely head here. You won’t regret it! Tell ‘em Justin sent yah 🙂
