A Tribute to the Queen of Resilience: Consuelo at 96 on Mother’s Day!
Today isn’t just a holiday; it’s a day to celebrate the 96-year masterclass in resilience that is my mother, Consuelo. To know her is to know what it looks like to face the unknown and conquer it with a smile.
The Journey of a Renaissance Woman
Born in 1930 and raised with the discipline of German nuns, my mother’s life became a map of courage and culture. She is a woman of four languages and zero excuses:
Paris: She moved to France so my father could finish his medical studies at the Sorbonne, learning French on the fly while caring for my oldest brother, Ricardo.
The USA: In 1968, she immigrated to Stamford, Connecticut, (once again to support my father’s medical studies) mastering English while raising five children in a brand-new world.
The Return: Whether in Lima, Paris, or Chiclayo, she navigated every move with a grace that left everyone in awe, always supporting my father’s medical career while remaining the unshakable heart of our home.
The Pro, the Pianist, and the Rule-Breaker
Mom was always the "pro." She was a volleyball player, a ballet dancer, and a classical pianist. At lunch, she would play classical music and command silence: "No one talks, everyone listens to the composer." As the resident talker of the family, I nearly went insane!
She was a master of Jacks—I loved playing with her, though she was such a pro I could never win. And when I—the daughter who wasn't so great at following rules—would push back, I’d hear her say: “¡Ay Dios mío, Janincita, no aprendes nada!” But then she’d smile, reach for my homework, and say, "Let me help you." She didn't just teach us how to live; she helped us carry our burdens.
The Strength Behind the Smile
When my father passed away in 2003, we saw the true depth of her steel. She remained the unwavering pillar for all six of us: Ricardo, Jeannine, Rafael, Magali, Claudia, and Dominique. Today, at 96, her mind is as sharp as a tack, her humor is still wicked, and her faith in God is the foundation for her 15 grandkids and 10 great-grandkids.
A Parallel of Strength
I realize now that my own resilience is just a reflection of hers. She taught me that you can be a warrior and a "happy person" at the same time. You don't have to choose.
Happy Mother’s Day to the woman who taught me that even if I don't follow all the rules, I can still lead a life full of grace.
A Wish for All
As I celebrate my own warrior today, I want to send a special wish to all the mothers in the world who have made a difference. To the women who teach, who fight, who stay strong, and who love unconditionally: Happy Mother’s Day to you all! 🌸
