More residential units could be coming to the heart of Downtown after Legacy Development Partners announced its acquisition of 610 Smithfield St., anchored by the Brooks Brothers store.

McKnight Realty Partners bought the 85,000-square-foot building for $1 million in 2002 with the goal to “substantially redesign and renovate the entrance lobby and office floors into first-class space, on par with the Heinz 57 Center across the street,” according to McKnight.

Legacy said it will now assess adding residential units to the upper floors of the building, and a potential rooftop development.

An “unusually strong” weather system that could bring severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and tornadoes in the Pittsburgh region overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

The remnants of a squall line advancing through the Midwest will likely hit Western Pennsylvania between midnight and 6 a.m., said Shannon Hefferan, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service office in Moon.

The main threat, she said, is gusty winds and tornadoes that could knock down trees and cause widespread power outages. Heavy rain and hail are not expected.

The intensity of the low-pressure system is unique for this time of year, Hefferan said. Typically, systems like this develop in the winter, spring and fall — and that intensity mixing with summertime moisture can create strong storms.

“That's why we’re on higher alert,” she said.
