The long awaited roof replacement at Mabry Mill is officially complete! Thanks to the skilled craftsmanship of William Cardis and Brian Crampton, the mill now boasts a brand new roof made from hand-riven white oak shakes, carefully crafted for historical accuracy and expected to last another 20 to 30 years.

This preservation project was made possible through generous donations to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and the dedicated efforts of the National Park Service. It marks a major milestone in the ongoing work to preserve one of the Parkway’s most photographed and beloved landmarks.

The project required months of planning and close collaboration with the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Training Center. More than 6,000 authentic shakes were created by Cumberland Mountain Craftsman of Harrogate, Tennessee who was chosen for their unmatched attention to detail.

While there’s still more restoration work ahead at Mabry Mill, this is a big step forward for this treasured piece of Appalachian heritage. Be sure to stop by and see the beautiful new roof for yourself next time you’re in Floyd County, VA!

The Mabry Mill Visitor Center is open everyday from 10 am to 5 pm (closed during the winter.) The grounds are open year-round from sunrise to sunset.
