I am sure you have heard the saying "out of the red" when someone is talking about trying to get out of debt.
But did you know that, historically, citizens of Scotland and Ireland used to paint the front door of their home red to show they no longer had a mortgage?
It was a symbol of financial freedom and pride that they no longer owed on their home.
Here in America, about 38% of homes are owned mortgage-free! What an exciting day that is when you know it's "yours" outright.
But once you are ready to paint your door red, it doesn't mean you need to stay there forever, now that it's finally paid off.
We've seen many folks who have raised their families in their home for many years here in Medford, own it outright, but realize that moving into a single-level home or downsizing would allow them to stay living independently much longer, giving them the freedom of the main floor laundry, more accessible bathrooms, fewer steps, and maybe the attached garage they always dreamed of!
