The City of Grants Pass received a $296,000 Community Wildfire Risk Reduction grant from the Oregon State Fire Marshal, which will cover the costs of creating defensible space around homes to help protect against wildfire.
The program is voluntary and funded100% by the State of Oregon.
Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis and will focus on the most at-risk areas in the city: properties within the Wildland Urban Interface. Fire personnel from Grants Pass Fire Rescue will be knocking on doors within high-risk areas to notify people about the program. If residents are not home, fire personnel will leave information at the door.

Once a resident or property owner applies for the program, someone from Grants Pass Fire Rescue or the State Fire Marshal’s Office will assess the property, focusing on the area from 5 to 10 feet from the house. The assessor will write a prescription that the resident or property owner can give to a licensed landscaper or contractor to perform the work on the prescription. There is no cost to the applicant; the landscaper or contractor will bill the City directly.

The assessor will make recommendations to create a defensible space within 5 to 10 feet of the house, such as removing shrubs or bark dust, and replacing them with more fire-tolerant plants and gravel, or pruning trees up to six feet above the ground.

Residents wishing to participate in the defensible space program can email [email protected], call 541-450-6200, or visit the Parkway Fire Station at 800 East Park St. between 8 am and 4 pm Monday through Friday.

💥Curious how the Southern Oregon real estate market changed between 2025 and 2026? Here’s a quick, year-over-year statistical update on key data points for our Rogue Valley market:

⬇Days on market have dropped but remain higher than the craziness of 2021-2022.
💰 Average Sale Prices have remained stable in Josephine County, while increasing right next door in Jackson County.
🏠 The Absorption Rate reflects how long it will take for current real estate inventory to sell in a given time period. This number has remained relatively stable in both counties.
🔑 The Sold-to-List Ratio compares the list price versus the final sold price. A sold-to-list of 95% means that homes are typically selling at 95% of original list price. Josephine County reflects an increase in the STL ratio, while Jackson County remains stable.

So, what does this all mean for you? Overall, homes are holding or increasing their value, which is great news for sellers. At the same time, more inventory on the market gives buyers some negotiating power while still ensuring sellers can make a profit.
