4th of July Safety Tips: Fireworks
Post Date: 06/26/2024 10:00 AM
Illustration of a boy, man and woman watching fireworks with text: Attend public fireworks displays, and leave the lighting to the professionals. Fireworks are dangerous to people and pets. Using them puts your property at risk." Includes FEMA, U.S. Fire Administration logos

Fireworks are synonymous with our celebration of Independence Day. But fireworks can be dangerous, causing serious burn and eye injuries.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an average of 180 people go to the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the month around the July 4 holiday.

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to go to a public show put on by experts, like MelBOOM, the City of Melbourne’s annual fireworks celebration at Front Street

Temporary Change in Water Treatment Scheduled, May 26-June 23
Post Date: 05/24/2023 8:45 AM
Beginning Friday, May 26, 2023 and continuing through June 23, 2023, Melbourne water customers may notice a chlorine odor in their tap water. During this period, the City of Melbourne will be temporarily changing its water disinfection method. This temporary change in water chemistry will not affect the safety of water for drinking.

Chloramine, which is formed from the combination of free chlorine and ammonia, is normally used for disinfection by the City of Melbourne. During the temporary change, free chlorine – without any ammonia – will be used.

“During this temporary period, customers may notice a chlorine taste or odor in their tap water,” explained Acting Public Works and Utilities Director Jennifer Spagnoli. “These temporary conditions will not cause adverse health effects. The water will remain safe for drinking and other uses.”

Changing to free chlorine periodically provides additional protection against microorganism contamination and helps ensure the water you receive remains safe.

April is Water Conservation Month in the City of Melbourne
Post Date: 04/03/2023 9:00 AM

The City of Melbourne is joining with other municipalities and the St. Johns River Water Management District in an effort to increase awareness about the importance of water conservation and the everyday changes all citizens can make to help save water and extend our water resources well into the future.

During the month of April, we will be sharing water-saving tips on our website and Facebook and Twitter pages as a way to remind everyone of the simple steps they can take every day to conserve water. For example:

Turn off the water as you brush your teeth, wash your face or shave. Faucets left in the open running position can waste several hundred to several thousand gallons of water per day.
Install low-flow toilets and showerheads. Rebates are available from the City of Melbourne for installing low-flow toilets.
Irrigate grass and outdoor plants only when they need it, properly maintain your irrigation system, and choose plants that require minimal water. Follow seasonal watering restrictions.
Install a rain barrel to capture and store rain water that flows off your rooftop. Harvested rainwater can be used to water your lawn and landscaped areas, fill ponds or fountains, and wash cars. The City of Melbourne offers $50 rebates to Melbourne residents who install rain barrels.
Find out if you can connect your irrigation system to the City’s reclaimed water distribution system. Using reclaimed water helps extends our traditional water supply by safely recycling an average of 2.3 million gallons of water every day.

WATER CONSERVATION MONTH - Melbourne

Mayor Paul Alfrey issued a proclamation during the March 14 City Council meeting designating April as Water Conservation Month in the City of Melbourne. In doing so, the City of Melbourne is joining with other municipalities and the St. Johns River Water Management District in an effort to increase awareness about the importance of water conservation and the everyday changes all citizens can make to help save water and extend our water resources well into the future.

This year is the 25th anniversary of Water Conservation Month in Florida. To get ready for this year’s theme of leak prevention, the City of Melbourne will be sharing tips and information during EPA WaterSense’s “Fix a Leak Week,” March 20-24.

During the month of April, the City of Melbourne will be sharing other tips for saving water at home as a way to remind everyone of the simple steps they can take every day to conserve water. For example:

- Turn off the water as you brush your teeth, wash your face or shave. Faucets left in the open running position can waste several hundred to several thousand gallons of water per day.
