Wishing Everyone a Happy Thanksgiving

I want to wish all my friends, neighbors and constituents a very Happy Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a time for us to gather with our families, loved ones and pause to count our blessings. If you’re traveling ‘over the river and through the woods’ this week, I hope you will drive or fly safely.
As we enjoy our Thanksgiving meals, we should also remember those who are not as fortunate and those who remain in need. In addition, we should all remember those who cannot be with their families because they are protecting our country overseas, as well as those veterans who have done so in the past.
Americans have officially celebrated Thanksgiving as a national holiday since November 1863. In the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln suggested that “the whole American People…set apart and observe the last Thursday of November” for the holiday.
However, many Americans already had family traditions of a Thanksgiving meal in the month of November, after the autumn harvest, for generations – dating from the Jamestown, Virginia, settlement in 1610 and the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts in 1621. George Washington had proclaimed November 26, 1789 a day of ‘public thanksgiving’ for the new U.S. Constitution.
The traditions we share around this annual gathering of families and friends are simple but profound. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
Calling Attention to Open Enrollment for Affordable Care Act Health Coverage
Image
Open Enrollment for 2020 Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance coverage began on November 1 and ends December 15, which is closer than you might think. The Trump Administration reduced the open enrollment period by six weeks after taking office and is keeping that limited window of opportunity again this year. You can visit www.Healthcare.gov/lower-costs to see if you qualify for tax credits that will be applied as discounts on your monthly insurance premium.
Federal Resources Available for Childcare Assistance

As your Congressman, one of my top priorities is to ensure that Memphians who work tirelessly to provide a strong foundation for their children have the support they need to be successful. Regardless of whether you are a working parent or a student yourself, it is important to know that the state of Tennessee has resources available for child care assistance. Eligible parents and guardians may receive support for child care services through Tennessee’s Smart Steps Child Care Payment Assistance Program. Visit here to see if you are eligible.
