While there is talk of first-time buyers struggling to purchase due to excessive daily spending, the reality is that younger buyers are more often paying off student loan debt (at higher amounts), while simultaneously paying higher rents.

Even among successful first-time home buyers, among those who were delayed purchasing, 49% cited high rent holding them back and 40% cited student loans. Rental costs have reduced in many markets, which could help new home buyers. Potential first-time buyers can also use strategies like looking for low downpayment programs such as FHA and VA loans, moving in with family temporarily to save for a downpayment, and even doubling up with roommates to purchase a home.
