If you've volunteered in the last few years at Dorothy Day House, there's a good chance you've worked with Ben. He connects volunteers with opportunities to serve, organizes projects, and helps families move into their new homes when they're ready for their next chapter. 🏡

Whether he's welcoming volunteers or helping carry boxes on move-in day, Ben's work helps families feel supported every step of the way.

As summer arrives, we are excited to share updates on our housing efforts and community partnerships. Two families are moving into their new homes this month, thanks to the support of dedicated volunteers and donors. We are seeking sponsors for school supplies and essentials to help 50 students start the year confidently. Join us in our mission to provide stability and resources for families working towards independence.

✨ Mission Monday ✨

After nine weeks with Dorothy Day's provocations, we're left with a simple but challenging truth:

"Holiness is not a state of perfection but a faithful striving that lasts a lifetime."

There is little point in admiring Dorothy Day if her words never move us to action. The real challenge is to keep striving. Day's witness wasn't one of perfection—it was one of persistence. She challenged us to keep showing up, loving our neighbors, seeking justice, and practicing hospitality, even when the work is difficult.

🏠➡️📚 Stable housing helps children succeed in school. The data proves it.

In Memphis, students experiencing homelessness are more likely to miss school, transfer schools mid-year, and face disruptions that make learning harder.

📊 During the 2023–24 school year:
• Attendance rates were below 80% for students experiencing homelessness
• Nearly half were chronically absent
• Students changed schools almost 3x more often than their housed peers

Behind every statistic is a child trying to learn while facing uncertainty about where they’ll sleep, how they’ll get to school, or whether they’ll have to start over somewhere new.

At Dorothy Day House, we know that housing stability and educational success go hand in hand. When families have a safe place to stay, children are better able to attend school consistently, build relationships with teachers, and stay connected to the resources they need to thrive.

Because this isn’t just a housing issue. It’s an education issue, too.
