HoPI Shelter Standards - 07/19/2020
HoPI is a house of rationality, which means that we aspire to change our model as we receive new data.

We have made minor adjustments since the beginning, but most have been to situate ourselves more and prepare for this to continue indefinitely. HoPI has always taken the numbers game approach; none of us have any serious immune issues or pre morbidities, so we largely use good sense to cut and protect how we can.

HoPI has only been having remote workers in this pandemic, and it is a policy for residents for the time being. We have a spacious backyard that is accessible through a side gate. We have felt comfortable enough to let guests, including clients, come in through the backyard; we make a point to stay more than 6 ft from each other and to largely wear masks, and it has worked out well so far.

At this time, it is the policy that members of this household are to try to stay outside of 6 ft from non household members and wear masks in situations where they might be exposed to others. We are avoiding non-ventilated areas that are not for this household, and are especially avoiding non-ventilated areas that might be populated.

We are lucky enough to have a lot of lovely residential area to walk through as well as Facebook campus to walk around. We also go on periodic field trips, so we aren't completely locked in even though we are making a point to be very isolated. Masks outside of the home should be remembered but are really only taken seriously in the context of being in proximity to non household members. Basically, we're not worried about not wearing a mask in totally open spaces where we aren't going to run into anyone.

We avoid in-store purchases, but have done drive by pickup for a particular item at Best Buy. We try to avoid certain situations but, if there are things that are pressing to get done, we will find a solution that we are comfortable with as a household. We do our purchasing through online order.

When packages come to the door, we generally wait a while to address the package. The benefit of waiting a while is for the air around the package where the delivery person was to clear out. We try to be careful in handling packaging, but primarily focus on throwing out the external packaging and washing our hands after doing so. We take the general attitude that the contents of the package were likely not touched recently enough for the virus to still be active on said surface.

We have done food delivery a few times, but we try to keep that number low and we are a little bit more finicky with switching out packaging. Touching something that somebody touched less than 2 hours ago and repeatedly bringing your hands towards your face is just not cute. Our attitude is that contractions largely have been through being in the same, enclosed room as somebody else with the virus so there's probably little likelihood of any caution being necessary in this circumstance... But, again, HoPI is using the numbers game strategy.

We've been good at sharing food and evolving our meal plans in accordance to what has worked for us. While we are individuals, we are a tribe in solidarity with each other and we support each other how ever we can to make this easier for each other. Food is not only a necessity, but also a comfort and an opportunity for socializing with humans. A lot of us were accustomed to regularly consuming restaurant food, either through ordering in or dining out, before all of this happened. It is important for our healthfulness to support each other in the transition.

In conclusion, HoPI is being isolationist and playing the numbers game. We're dedicated to making this pragmatic strategy as fun as we can. We're actively making upgrades that make distanced-backyard and online interfacing more rewarding experiences. We realize that we are very privileged in means regarding avoiding exposure and we wish everybody else the best of luck with handling things relative to the means that they have.
Your fearless sibyl,
