Good advice! And an even better excuse to hold off on yard work for now.

As temps keep climbing and days get longer, you may be tempted to get your flowerbeds back in tip-top shape, but it’s not quite time yet!

Many of Wisconsin’s pollinators are still in “do not disturb” mode, snoozing away in hollow-stemmed plants and leaf litter, like this common eastern bumble bee.

Experts with the Xerces Society suggest leaving your rakes, garden gloves and yard waste bins in the shed until overnight temperatures reach 50 degrees consistently.

Instead of disturbing critical habitat, try reading a book, doing a jigsaw puzzle, doing your taxes (don’t forget to look for "Endangered resources" in the donations section!), tidying up the garage or cleaning the gutters.

While you may be eager to get outside and play in the garden, it’ll be time to toil in the soil before you know it!

The $1.3 billion cleanup of the Fox River took decades, but has spurred Green Bay and Brown County to reconnect with the waterfront. Here's how.

Love to see Green Bay, Wis. top U.S.News & World Report’s “Best Places to Live!” One factor: The city’s embrace of the Fox River, which runs through the city’s heart and into the bay of Green Bay. Such recognition would have been unheard of 25 years ago when I was reporting on the Fox as a proposed national Superfund site. Many feared it would give Green Bay a “black eye.”
Instead, the $1.3-billion cleanup of chemical PCBs from the Fox has helped spur fishing and enviable riverfront trails. Trendy restaurants, apartments and condos have risen along the riverbanks.

Completed in 2020, the removal of toxic PCBs from the Lower Fox River and bay of Green Bay cost the paper companies responsible for the pollution $1.3 billion. Preceding the cleanup was a years-long fight between state officials and federal agencies. The co-authors of a new book about that battle jo...
