A cozy fireplace can turn dangerous without proper chimney maintenance. Chimney fires are often caused by burning improper materials that create creosote, a highly flammable buildup inside the chimney.

“Common examples include unseasoned or wet wood, cardboard, and paper products,” says Tracy Zarriello, owner of Queen Sweep Chimney Plumbing & Heating in New Jersey. Without regular cleaning, creosote can ignite, and wood stoves pose added risk because they burn hotter than traditional fireplaces, Zarriello explains.
