Own a condo? Your building’s insurance may not protect YOU.
One of the biggest misconceptions I see with condo owners is assuming the association’s master insurance policy covers everything.
It doesn’t.
Your association typically insures the building and common areas, but you should still have your own HO-6 condo insurance policy, including personal liability coverage.
Why does liability matter? If something happens inside your unit — a plumbing leak, an overflowing appliance, or another incident that causes damage to a neighboring unit — you could potentially be held responsible for those damages.
Your personal condo policy can also help protect your:
• Interior improvements and finishes
• Furniture and personal belongings
• Additional living expenses after a covered loss
• Personal liability if you’re responsible for damage or injury
Even if your condo is paid off and no lender is requiring insurance, that doesn’t mean you should go without it.
The master policy protects the association. Your personal policy helps protect you.
Check your coverage before you need it — especially your liability limits.
Save this post and send it to a condo owner who may not realize what their association policy actually covers.
