MC history.
The first Franklin Street Bridge in 1891. This image was scanned from the original glass plate negative from the Old Lighthouse Museum archives. Edward F. Bailey was the photographer.

It is amazing that this original negative survived. There are about 4-5 more negatives of this old swing bridge. The 1858 Old Lighthouse & Hoosier Slide can be seen in the background.

Not much is known about the history of this bridge. There are a few old article clippings stating that it was very problematic and broke down often. It was replaced in 1906 by a lift bridge. The lift bridge was destroyed on June 24, 1910 when the SS United States backed into it. A temporary pontoon bridge was used until a 3rd bridge could be constructed in 1911. The bridge was closed when a shaft on the west side of the bridge cracked in July of 1930. It was impossible to open or close the span.

Happy 90th to our bridge! The current Franklin St. Bridge was dedicated on May 20, 1932.
