Chapter 2
The Author’s Intent
We can take, for example, the structure of written communication. The purpose of writing a letter is always to convey one’s specific thoughts, desires, or instructions to the intended audience. Should someone read this letter and interpret the words as allegory where the subject and subsequent details are redefined by the reader to mean something far different than the actual words, the result is a severe breach in communication, and the true meaning is lost.
If this interpretation is shared, one might confront you and say you have misread the letter and you are manufacturing a false view of what you have read. Others might applaud your interpretation and think you to be highly insightful. In actuality, what you have done is created your own subjective truth and ignored the author’s original intent.
Moreover, any subsequent action taken by the reader in reaction to the letter based on the altered definition of the meaning of its contents are not and must not be attributed to the author since it does not reflect the true authorial intent. Countless atrocities have been perpetrated, wars fought, and lives lost, due to this error. Whether intentionally or in ignorance misinterpretation of words said or written have created chaos and untold suffering solely as a result of one’s unwillingness to carefully consider context and a tendency for bad actors to manipulate meanings for their own immoral desires.
Words have meanings and are designed as a standard form of communication. When words are spoken or written, the intention is to convey actual meaning to the hearer and in order to have a logical discourse, original intent is critically important. When we distort and revise the meanings of words, ex we lose the ability to effectively communicate; we surrender truth to ambiguity and the result is not only an inability to effectively communicate realistically, but also encourages the removal of moral and social absolutes.
If we accept that one’s personal opinion of reality is valid, and that truth is subject to one’s own interpretation then the foundation of morality and truth are relegated to mere preference.
