Acreage comes with its own checklist. Is the water from a well, and when was it tested? Is there a septic system, and has it been inspected? Is the heat propane? What internet actually reaches the house? None of it is a dealbreaker, but all of it belongs in your offer and your inspection.

A lot of Richmond's most loved neighborhoods were built before 1930. The Fan, the Museum District, Church Hill, much of Northside. Rowhouses and foursquares with plaster walls, tall windows, and real character.

Buying one means asking a few questions a newer house would not raise. What is the wiring? Is the heat a boiler and radiators, and when was it serviced? What is under the roof, and where will you park?

None of those are reasons to walk away. They are reasons to bring an inspector who knows older houses.
