“When October’s stars shine clear, a frosty morning may be near.” ✨🍂

There’s a little weather wisdom behind this saying: on clear, calm nights, the ground loses heat quickly, making frost more likely by sunrise. A clear sky doesn’t guarantee frost, but it’s a good reminder to check the forecast and protect tender plants.

Have you had your first frost yet? Tell us where you are! 👇

⏰ Don’t forget to “fall back”!

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 1, 2026. Before you head to bed Saturday night, set your clocks BACK one hour and enjoy that extra hour of sleep.

It’s also a good seasonal reminder to check the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

🍂 Are you ready for the earlier sunsets — or do you wish we’d keep Daylight Saving Time year-round?

🍂 Soil Moisture: Why It Matters in the Fall

Before the snow starts piling up in the mountains, something important is happening beneath our feet.

The soil is recharging. 💧

Think of dry soil like a sponge. When fall storms bring rain or early snow, dry soil absorbs that moisture first. The drier the ground is going into winter, the more future snowmelt may be absorbed into the soil before it can make its way to our streams and reservoirs.

But when soils are already holding plenty of moisture, they have less room to absorb additional water. That means more rain and melting snow can continue downhill into streams, rivers, and reservoirs. 🏔️💦

That’s why we pay attention to soil moisture in the fall.

Healthy fall soil moisture can help set the stage for a more efficient spring runoff and help more of Utah’s snowpack reach the water sources we depend on.

What happens beneath our feet this fall can make a difference when the snow melts next spring. 🍁➡️❄️➡️💧
