Wilhelm Land Surveying is on vacation! Although the surveyor is on vacation…apparently he never stops being a surveyor! Because today, we stumbled across this display of antique surveying equipment at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, MT.

Cory couldn’t help but stop to admire the old tools of the trade. Surveyors used tools like these long before GPS, total stations, and drones. They measured land with chains, compasses, transits, and a whole lot of patience and skill!

It was fun to see a piece of surveying history and appreciate how far the profession has come.

Taking my family along on surveying projects is one of my favorite things to do. My two-year-old is already proving to be the best “assistant” I could ask for—always ready to help (even when I dont need it), point out “important” sticks, and make sure every site visit has plenty of snack breaks.

It’s not just about the work—it’s about the memories we’re making together. Who knows… maybe we have a future land surveyor in training on our hands!

Early this morning, on my way to a survey outside of town, I blew a tire on the trailer. In order to stay on schedule, I had to leave the trailer and side by side on the side of the road. But, I am thankful for my family for going to the rescue. Unfortunately today’s survey is going to be a lot of walking without the side by side…
