🚨 59% of Title Firms Reported a Fraud Attempt
You might see those late-night TV ads warning about someone pretending to be a property owner. But how often is this actually happening?
According to ALTA’s 2026 survey, 59% of title firms reported at least one attempted seller impersonation fraud case in the previous year.
And certain property characteristics show up more often in these cases:
📌 72% — Properties with absentee owners
📌 68% — Properties owned free and clear
📌 55% — Properties of recently deceased individuals
These figures represent the share of firms rating each characteristic as at least somewhat common among seller impersonation fraud targets.
