Nathan Hale had just turned 21 years old.

To put that into perspective, were he the same age today, he would’ve been born in 2005. He was Yale educated and had a prosperous, long life ahead of him.

This is not the stereotype of a revolutionary willing to risk his life because he had nothing to lose.

Nathan Hale was just a kid. He could’ve avoided the conflict altogether (as many people did), not chosen sides, and looked forward to a peaceful life in what was about to become the most prosperous country in the history of human civilization.

But he didn’t do that.

When General George Washington personally asked for a volunteer to spy on the British troop movements on Long Island—behind enemy lines—Nathan Hale volunteered. He knew how important it would be for the cause of liberty.

At this point, morale was low. The Americans were losing the war.

He knew what it meant if he was captured.

His brothers had fought the British at Lexington and Concord, the famous battles that started the war. It’s important to note that soldiers fighting these early battles in 1775 risked far more than than we may realize—the Continental Congress didn’t even unite to officially declare our independence until July of 1776. And even then it was controversial! The battles at Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill were fought purely on principle, before anyone knew there might be reinforcements from the other colonies.

Early on, it was still a Massachusetts war, not an “American” war. The other colonies didn’t want to get sucked in to a violent conflict with the most powerful military empire on Earth.

But this was the kind of family Nathan Hale was raised in.

They didn’t wait until it was “safe” to join the patriot cause. They were willing to risk their very lives to create the philosophical momentum that eventually won over public opinion.

So in 1776, Nathan Hale volunteered to become a spy for General Washington.

Ordinary soldiers were not usually executed if captured. Spies were, because it was viewed as a “dishonorable” act of treason.

And that’s exactly what happened. He was eventually captured behind enemy lines, crossing the Long Island Sound.

The next morning, September 22nd, 1776, he was executed.

He was still a kid when he uttered his famous last words before being hanged: “My only regret is that I have but one life to give for my country.”

It took 5 more years of sacrifice, but the American cause eventually prevailed in 1781 at Yorktown. The early sacrifice of men like Nathan Hale convinced the French that the war was winnable, and they finally allied with the American colonists to help defeat the British.

Like most of history, this was never a forgone conclusion. It required men like Nathan Hale (and his brothers) to risk their lives BEFORE there was any certainty of reinforcements. They were happy to do the right thing....because it was the right thing.

Not because the outcome was guaranteed.

It almost never is.

So remember that Memorial Day is not just a generic patriotic holiday.

It’s specifically to remember those who gave their LIVES for our freedom—men who traded all of their tomorrows for our today.

Men like Nathan Hale.

Well, it finally happened. I had to grab something at Target, and I totally didn't realize I was wearing a red shirt. If you frequent Target, you might know where this story is headed…

As I made my way through the aisles, a woman stopped me and said, "Excuse me, can you help me find something?"

I looked at her and said, "Well, I don't work here, but let me see what I can do!"

She laughed and apologized for mistaking me for an employee, but I told her that it was completely my fault for going to Target wearing red! I then asked her what she was looking for, so we could see if I could actually be of help. Well, it turned out that she actually did need someone who worked there, and not just a friendly customer. So I walked with her over to where an employee was standing and I introduced them to each other. She thanked me for taking the time to try and help her, and I left her in much more able hands.

Just a reminder – life is better helping others, and learn from me and avoid wearing red while shopping at Target 😉

I recently had the pleasure of helping a lovely couple that owned their home in North Brunswick for over 30 years, and it had come time to make their move!

The story begins when they reached out to me to talk about selling their home. I had helped the wife's brother and his wife sell their home, and they wanted to see what I could do for them. We talked on the phone about their home, what they were looking to do, and what concerns they had, then we set a time to get together so they could show me their home.

When we got together, they showed me around, and I told them what I felt they should and shouldn't do to get their home ready to sell. When you've been living in a home that long, you want to make sure your home shows well, and you want to make sure you're going to get a return on any improvements you make before selling. Most of what I suggested were low-cost and no-cost things they could do to get more money for their home. Who doesn't want to sell their home for more?

They were ready to hit the market in early February, right when all the snow hit, and this brings us to the first photo. This is when I had my photographer come out for professional photos, we made an awesome video showing off the best features of their home, and I wrote up an exciting listing for their property! And how did my marketing do? We had over 125,000 views on the video of their home, a ton of showings, and we had multiple offers, all while dealing with conditions that most people would not call optimal for selling a home!

The fact that we had multiple offers meant my clients had options. They were able to choose the best offer, with the best financing, and with the best extras thrown in, like the buyers limiting the home inspection and waiving the appraisal! It made the whole process so much easier for them.

And that's the takeaway here - with the right marketing, you can sell even in the toughest of circumstances, and do quite well!

If you're thinking about making a move, whether now or down the road, reach out and we can talk about your options!

💸 💸 💸 Someone sent me this text today. I get texts like this multiple times a week. Notice how the sender is saying they would like to buy a home, and for it to be “ideally something off-market”? There’s a reason for that. They don’t want the seller exposing their home to the market and finding out what they could really get for it. Then they can lowball them and take as much equity away from them as possible. Don’t fall for this! See the first comment for more.

We recently had Ronald Negra come speak to our AARP North Brunswick chapter about his book, "Waves of Hope". This inspiring book is about his mother, Agnes Joan Negra, and how she helped families of POW during WWII. Using a shortwave radio, she became one of the only communication links to let families know of the status of their missing loved ones. Think about it - back then, there was no internet, no email, and none of the immediate news we're all used to in today's world. This book wonderfully illustrates how Agnes helped alleviate the unknowns and concerns these families were experiencing, and includes actual letters she received from the families she helped.

Here is an example of one of the letters she received, dated June 17, 1943:
"I am indeed grateful for the news of my husband, T/Sgt. Forrest S. Hughes. This card of thanks can hardly show the extent of my appreciation for your effort in getting this message to me. It was difficult to bear this feeling of loss upon receipt of the previous report that my husband was missing in action - one often imagines the worst. Your card brought a relief for me hard to express in words. We have received confirmation of your report. Many, many thanks. Sincerely, Mrs. Forrest Hughes."

That letter is just one of the many that are featured in the book.

Agnes Joan Negra was recognized as a "Homefront Hero" in the National WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C., and deservedly so. If you're looking for something to inspire you and remind you of just how good people are, you should definitely pick up this book! And a big thank you to Ronald Negra for sharing his mother's incredible story.
