Enjoy the summer solstice!

SUMMER SOLSTICE: Today’s summer solstice (3:50p CT) is the earliest in 228 years, it last occurred on June 20, 1796.

The solstices also do not land on the same calendar day every year because the astronomical year is 365.25 days long. Accordingly, the summer solstice for the Northern Hemisphere shifts between June 20, 21 and 22.

The sun's direct rays reach their northernmost position with respect to Earth's equator today, along the Tropic of Cancer, at 23.5 degrees north latitude.

This is our “longest day” of the year in terms of the amount of daylight. After today, the amount of daylight we experience will begin to shorten, and continues until the winter solstice in December.
