Headed out to the deer woods this weekend?... check this out
Even though the southern states are already bursting with green, much of whitetail country is just starting to wake up — and that makes April the perfect window to move fast and get critical habitat work done before the woods fill in and slow you down.
Here’s what should be on your checklist:
✅ Timber Work
Now’s the time for cutting. Bedding areas, travel corridors, shooting lanes — all are easier to tackle before the green-up. Don’t forget to flag and paint key features that’ll vanish once foliage sets in.
✅ Tree Planting
April is prime time for bare-root trees. Whether it’s fruit trees, conifers, hardwoods, or shrubs, planting now helps bring your long-term plan to life. Not sure where to start? There's a species for every goal.
✅ Prescribed Fire
Fire is a powerful tool for restoring habitat and improving the landscape. If it's part of your strategy, this is the season to light it up.
✅ Frost Seeding
Even if your freeze-thaw cycle is on its last leg, get that seed down ASAP — especially when broadcast spreading. Early soil contact equals better germination.
✅ Property Cleanup
Remove old stands, trash, and any eyesores. A clean property is easier to manage — and it just feels better.
✅ Herbicide Applications
Once frost seeding is wrapped up, pre-emergents like simazine can go down. Follow up with post-emergents (glyphosate, 2,4-D) after initial green-up for your first burn-down pass.
✅ Build or Improve Hillside Trails/Beds
Flat spots get used more. A little shovel work can go a long way to increase activity — and your shot odds come fall.
✅ Block Out Habitat Days
Get some summer workdays on the calendar. Invite family, friends, and new hunters to help — and to keep them coming back when it counts in the fall.
✅ Trail Cameras
Set cams on winter rye to monitor deer movement and scout for turkeys while you’re at it. We might hunt gobblers for a bit… before cranking up the chainsaws!
