Food for thought…the word respect comes to mind.

Italy's PM Giorgia Meloni said it in one sentence. If you choose to live in a foreign country, accept its laws, its culture, and its traditions.

To one half of the comment section, that is just basic respect. The other half asks who decides what counts as "tradition" in a country with thousands of dialects, regional cuisines, and migrant histories.

Both sides feel they are defending something real. That's why this short line keeps spreading.

Nothing like destroying lives of those that cannot fend for themselves. This is not ok. We should all be sick over this. 😢 😡

Some say they had no choice. Others say if you can evacuate yourself, you can evacuate your dog. The internet is not divided on this one.

As thousands of expats fled Dubai following Iranian retaliatory strikes in March 2026, animal shelters across the UAE were overwhelmed by abandoned pets. Dogs were found tied to lampposts, cats left at doorsteps, and vets reported being flooded with requests to euthanize healthy animals whose owners didn't want to deal with them before leaving.

Rescue volunteers described hundreds of posts across WhatsApp and Facebook groups within days. Organizations like K9 Friends Dubai and War Paws called the situation incomprehensible — especially in a city where many fleeing residents could afford private jets and security convoys.

Under UAE law, abandoning a pet is punishable by fines and jail time, but enforcement during the crisis has been virtually nonexistent. The question now: should people who leave animals behind ever be allowed to own one again?

Hungary has rolled out solar heated tunnel shelters designed to protect stray and homeless dogs during harsh winter weather. The structures collect heat from sunlight during the day and keep it trapped overnight, offering warmth and shelter when temperatures drop below freezing.

Animal welfare organizations say these tunnels are already making a real difference. By reducing the risk of hypothermia, the shelters give vulnerable dogs a safer place to rest and a better chance of surviving extreme cold conditions.
