503 NW 4th Ave has such a neat story! Tax records show the house was built in 1930, but the sidewalk is stamped 1918. So there may have been something on the property even earlier. The earliest owners traced back are James and Ethlene Miller, who bought it in 1945. James was president of the First National Bank and when he passed in 1946, it’s said the entire town of Mineral Wells closed to honor him. Not long after, Cantex contacted Mrs. Miller about renting a room to a gentleman from Japan who was coming to learn from Cantex. That was the start of the Miller Boarding House, which she ran until she sold and moved.
Another local family owned the home from 1968–1987, when the current owner bought it. The living room was originally one big open room—he added the small divider wall by the front door and the niches on either side of the fireplace. Originally there was a door on the right that opened to the back of a wall and a 6-inch-deep bookcase on the left. The house still has all original hardwood floors, most of the original plaster walls and ceilings, and all original glass hardware on the interior doors. The upstairs bathrooms were remodeled in 2024, and the carport and shop were added in 2013. Fun fact: famed local photographer A. F. Weaver also lived in the home as a young boy prior to 1945.
