It was a privilege to speak at the state capital last week about the struggles nonprofit housing and others are having with getting and maintaining property insurance coverage. Thank you to Minnesota Consortium of Community Developers, their members and the taskforce for their dedication to finding long-term solutions for this growing issue facing Minnesotans. Mary Novak, Executive Director of Riverton Community Housing, testified last week at the Homeowner's and Commercial Property Insurance Task Force meeting.

Mary shared, "As an executive director of a small affordable housing organization, I never anticipated having to spend so much time focused on insurance. But, in an effort to prepare for changes to requirements by insurers, we are constantly trying to improve security at our properties, keep our properties well-maintained and we have a good claims history, but that doesn’t seem to help strengthen our position to maintain affordable insurance coverage."

The Task Force will begin to consider recommendations in the upcoming meetings to strengthen and stabilize property insurance for the affordable housing market. Stay tuned for updates.

While we know the world's largest peace pole sticks out in the community, that is the point! We want to catch people's eye and have them wonder what "May peace prevail on earth" means to them.

Located in the Como neighborhood, this transformed grain elevator at Brook Avenue Housing Co-op is more than a mural – it's a beacon of unity and a celebration of our shared humanity. The words, displayed in six languages, reflect the diversity of our city and the universal longing for peace.

As a community-driven organization, Riverton was proud to partner in creating this iconic Peace Pole. It stands as a reminder that even amidst differences, we can find common ground and work towards a more harmonious world.

At Riverton Community Housing, we believe in creating spaces where neighbors become like family. Our recent garden party at Franklin Housing Co-op was the perfect example of this in action!

With delicious local eats, from Ethiopian dishes to classic pizza and pasta, there was something for every taste bud. The kids had a blast with face painting, balloon animals, and bubbles galore, while adults enjoyed quality time with neighbors.

We were excited to have join us, sharing insights on the car-sharing program coming to Franklin this fall. It's partnerships like these that enhance our community's lifestyle.

Minnesota made history when Governor Walz signed the Cooperative Housing Act into law last month. This new legislation will make it easier to form and fund housing cooperatives, which we know empower residents, promote inclusivity, and ensure financial sustainability. At Riverton Community Housing, we believe quality housing is a right, not a privilege, and this law aligns perfectly with our goal of expanding cooperative housing options.

The Cooperative Housing Act clarifies the process for forming a cooperative and unlocks funding specifically for cooperatives. This is a huge win for the communities we serve. We're grateful to the Northcountry Cooperative Foundation for leading the charge on this issue and to all the partners who collaborated to make the law a reality.

Amidst the rapid increase in housing development near the University of Minnesota campus, we see an opportunity to differentiate ourselves. Unlike many out-of-state and hard-to-reach landlords and property management groups, our office is always open, and our team is ready to serve.
