"With Square Roots, which opened in mid-September in Minneapolis’ Historic Coliseum Building, founder Jared Brewington is trying to address two sides of restaurant access: who gets the training to work in a restaurant serving seafood and short rib, and who can afford to eat there.

'Most people are priced out of the game for fine dining on a regular basis,' Brewington said. His goal is to 'decouple the price from excellence,' while teaching young adults seeking entry into the hospitality industry about the techniques, ingredients and kitchen culture involved in that level of dining."

Community investment can take many forms. 🌱

Sometimes it means providing a business with space to grow. Sometimes it means helping an entrepreneur access financing or technical assistance. And sometimes it means helping a local business turn an idea for a better, greener property into reality.

For more than 75 years, Phelan Manufacturing has called South Minneapolis home. When it came time to improve its parking lot, the company saw an opportunity to do more than replace pavement. With Redesign serving as its fiscal sponsor, Phelan was able to access funding from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization to partner with Metro Blooms to install four rain gardens designed to capture stormwater runoff and help protect water quality.

It’s a great example of how Redesign’s work goes beyond buildings and business support. By helping connect community ideas with the resources to make them possible, we can support investments that benefit the neighborhood and the environment.

When Hannah Wydeven started Solcana Fitness at 25, she had a vision for a different kind of fitness community - but not yet a lot of business experience or credit history. That’s exactly why Redesign created The Verna building in Seward: to give startups and emerging businesses access to affordable space and a chance to grow.

Today, Solcana owns its own building and is creating a fitness community that helps people build confidence, connection, and belonging.

The Historic Coliseum Building has been part of this neighborhood for more than 100 years. After the fires of 2020, our community determined that this place was worth rebuilding.
