Do you know what an ADU is?

You may call them granny flats, tiny homes, carriage houses, mother-in-law suites, or something similar. Legally, an ADU is an Accessory Dwelling Unit, and they’re becoming more and more popular nationwide. Put in a backyard, they can be used for aging-in-place, short-term rental income generators, yoga studios, home offices, special needs children who need a little independence…the possibilities are fun to think about! There are already plans afoot in some MN communities to cluster a dozen or more of them together, creating little pockets of awesome housing. Have a cabin up north and want more bedrooms? The floor plans are customizable, which makes it an easy way to add more sleeping or living areas to your property.

I spent an afternoon this past week learning about ADUs through a MN-based company called YardHomes. They have several models, including a two-story option with an ADU stacked over a 2-car garage. The model pictured is their one-story CitiCabin with optional sleeping loft, which usually costs around 160-175k. Financing options for ADUs have become more commonplace in recent years.
