In new developments where homes are close together, they sometimes lack soffit vents, which can reduce the risk of fire spreading from house to house. The soffits are fireblocked with gypsum board, then covered, usually with aluminum. The builders move the eave venting onto the roof deck. A common defect is that the shingles covering the on-deck vents are installed too low, blocking the intakes. Lomanco is a common brand, and their instructions show that the shingles are supposed to rest on a tab to keep the intakes open.
