My neighbor and I found out several things during the power outage lasting from Thursday night into Saturday evening. (Both houses have safety interlock panels on breaker boxes and have generator receptacles just inside garage doors. We have large portable whole-house generators with low THD ratings and have gas water heaters requiring no electricity).
●Generator only needs to run intermittently every couple hours vs automatic constant-run setups.
●You control when the generator runs.
●You can maintain safe freezer and fridge temps.
●You can maintain reasonable AC or heat temps.
●You have access to any house circuit, such as the well for water usage.
●You put far less hours on your generator engine.
●You save money on energy costs like natural gas.
●You save money on generator inspection, maintenance and installation costs.
●You get less periods of noise and more silence.
●It does require some work, planning and knowledge.
●Generator stores inside dry garage when not in use.
●Change generators any time without requiring an installer.
