The development of Fort Missoula solidified the city’s position as a trading center. The University of Montana was opened in Missoula in 1893 and since its inception has strongly contributed to the growth and cultural richness of the city. Over the years Missoula has moved away from the logging industry and is now primarily a service oriented economy supporting the populations of the Missoula Valley as well as surrounding areas.
