Extreme cold temps are coming Thursday night, so your mom reminds you to wear a warm coat, a hat, and mittens. Public Works & Mobility reminds you to prevent frozen water pipes by doing the following: open the doors to your lower kitchen & bathroom cabinets to let warm air reach pipes, keep basement & other windows near water pipes closed, don't allow cold air returns to blow on water pipes, briefly turn on all water fixtures every day during a cold snap, and run hot water through your pipes when possible. Old man winter is going to rear his ugly head in the next few days!
1. Change your furnace filter, this will keep your furnace from working to hard and keep equipment failure at bay. Depending on the size, your filter may need to be changed as often as once a month, especially when the furnace is running a lot.
2. Check the batteries in your thermostats, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
3. Make sure the furnace return air vents are clear of furniture and clutter.
4. If you are concerned about freezing pipes, keep the cabinet doors under your sinks open to allow warm air to circulate. And faucets open at a slow drip, be aware drain lines can also freeze or if they are clogged they can overflow. So do not leave the faucets open if that is a concern in your home.
