Most of us have recently received the letter from the State of Montana explaining the process for registering your primary residence as such so that you can get the primary residence tax rate when it goes into effect in 2026. If you have already received a tax rebate for your primary residence, you do not need to do anything more as you are already registered. If not, beginning on December 1, you can register your property and you have until March 1 of next year to get it on the list.
I encourage all of you to ask ChatGPT the following question:
“What is my estimated property tax in X county for a primary residence based on 2026 property tax rates if the current property assessed value is X?”
Fill in the county for your home and the new property tax assessment that you received in the mail.
Then brace yourself. And prepare. This estimate will not include the additional mills
I calculated mine manually and then asked ChatGPT. And the estimates matched.
