A grand old home that was built in 1907 when Chicago's moneyed class was building fine country mansions in Lake Forest and played a small part in an Oscar-winning film seven decades later went up for sale over the weekend for the first time in three decades.

The asking price is just under $7.5 million for the Woodland Road estate. Designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw, a noted architect of the early 20th century whose works in Lake Forest alone number 40, the mansion is a large red brick Georgian with formal rooms, sun porches, formal gardens and a long gravel driveway leading from the street, for the full effect of arriving.

In the living room is pine paneling from the early 19th century imported from England. The paneling is the backdrop for this telling scene of family tension in "Ordinary People," the 1980 film starring Mary Tyler Moore and Donald Sutherland that won the year's Oscar for Best Picture.

If it sells for over $7 million, the house — five bedrooms in roughly 7,300 square feet on 2.5 acres on Woodland Road — will be the third to do so in the 2020s. Or it might be beaten to that mark by a much larger property, an eight-acre estate that came on the market in 2024 at $15 million and has been under contract to a buyer since July.

A lakefront mansion in Winnetka sold for $11.4 million, the second home in the North Shore town to sell for over $10 million in less than a month.

The property is a seven-bedroom, roughly 15,800-square-foot house built in 2005 on 1.3 acres on Sheridan Road. It has a pool on its blufftop lawn and 100 feet of Lake Michigan beach at the foot of the bluff.

"The house is fully loaded (with) great features that could never be replicated today," listing agent Jena Radnay of Christie's International Real Estate told Crain's in an email. That may be in part because Winnetka last year put in place restrictions on how much and where lakefront property owners can build on their blufftop land.

Morris Silverman, who bought the Sheridan Road site in 2003 for $5.78 million and completed the house in 2005, sold it July 9, a little less than 11 months after putting it on the market.
