I have been seeing alot of ads for landscaping lately. I have touched on this before, but maybe I should do so again. Wood mulch is extremely bad for a house. A short story, I inspected a house maybe 20 years ago that had moisture issues in the basement, SEVERE. I looked around the exterior and noticed at least 12 inches of wood mulch around the house. Inside water was pouring in ( it rained the day before). I proceeded to give my client my thoughts, Unknown the home owner was listening. Come to find out,( she was angry at screaming), she just paid alot of money to get the wood mulch placed around her home. I proceeded to point out to her the foundation was separating and water was pouring in many areas of the house. She still didn't get it . Wasn't the expensive mulch she paid for. I never really know what happened to the house after that. I had another experience with the stuff, a potential client had asked me about termites. I had asked do you have wood mulch around your house. He said yes. I had told him to get rid of it an seek treatment. Fast forward to 2 years, I saw him again and asked about it. He stated, he had to jack up a section of the house to replace a bunch of wood at an extremely large cost. Wood mulch is fine away from the house, but no where near it. Do yourself a favor and use common sense before you have issues that will be costly to repair.
