As a REALTOR®, this story really caught my attention.

One of America’s most important preservation efforts wasn’t a restoration project or a government mandate—it was a real estate transaction. Because leaders recognized the value of preserving a place tied to our nation’s history, future generations can still stand where the Declaration of Independence was signed nearly 250 years ago.

It’s a reminder that the decisions we make about property today can have a lasting impact tomorrow. Some places are worth more than the land they’re built on—they hold the stories that connect us to our past.

🇺🇸 Preserving history starts with recognizing its value.

In 1816, Pennsylvania decided it no longer needed the old statehouse in Philadelphia. The state planned to sell the yard off as building lots and let private developers do as they wished with the building. The room where the Declaration of Independence had been signed in 1776 was going to be demolished.

Philadelphia's city government stepped in and bought the property. It took five years of negotiation. The state insisted on $150,000. The city paid it. The room where the delegates had signed the Declaration still stands. The chair Thomas Jefferson sat in is still there. You can walk in off the street and stand in the exact spot.

The first historic preservation effort in American history was a real estate transaction. The room exists because a city council made a purchase in 1818.

Share this with whoever thinks preservation is someone else's problem.

Memorial Day reminds us that freedom has always come at a price paid by others.

Today, we honor the service members who never made it home — the men and women who gave their lives in defense of this country and the people they loved. We remember their courage, their commitment, and the futures they sacrificed so future generations could live in freedom.

We also remember the families who carry that loss every day. Behind every fallen hero is a circle of loved ones whose lives were forever changed.

As flags wave, gatherings begin, and another summer season starts, may we take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this day and never lose sight of the sacrifice behind it.

With gratitude and remembrance this Memorial Day.

There’s an old Irish saying:
“𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀.”

The best homes aren’t measured in square feet or lake views (though those are nice). They’re measured in laughter around the table, neighbors dropping by, and the quiet comfort of a place that truly feels like yours.

At our house, Henry and Bailey are pretty sure that includes dogs​, too.🐾

On St. Patrick's Day, it’s a good reminder of what “home” is really about.

𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲. 𝗨𝗽𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲-𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲.

The severe weather threat around Smith Mountain Lake has passed, and my two real estate assistants, Henry and Bailey, have officially stood down from storm duty and returned to their preferred recovery position - upside-down relaxation.

We’re not quite finished with the system yet. The back side of the storm is moving through now, with temperatures dropping quickly and freezing conditions returning overnight. Winter makes another brief comeback tomorrow. ❄️🥶

Days like this are a quiet reminder of what home really gives us — a safe place to ride out the storms and a comfortable place to relax once the skies clear.
