New Law Helps Veterans Stay in Their Homes
A new law just passed that could make a big difference for veterans using VA home loans.
🏠 Here’s what it does:
✅ Partial Claim Program – If a veteran falls behind on payments, the VA can now step in, cover the missed amounts (interest-free), and move that balance to the end of the loan — so vets can stay in their homes without needing to refinance.
✅ Expanded Homelessness Prevention – Boosts funding for community services that support at-risk veterans through the VA’s Grant & Per Diem program.
✅ Modernized Loan Rules – Veterans can now pay their buyer’s agent directly if needed — giving them more flexibility and stronger buying power in today’s competitive market.
📊 Why it matters:
Rising mortgage delinquencies have put as many as 58,000 veterans at risk of foreclosure after the prior VASP assistance program ended in May 2025. More than 75,000 veterans were seriously behind on their VA loan payments in April 2025
This helps fill the gap left when the prior program (VASP) ended earlier this year — and it’s expected to help tens of thousands of veterans who are currently more than 90 days behind on their VA loan.
